AV1 Compressed Images - AVIF

AVIF is a modern image format that makes pictures look great while taking up less space than older formats like JPEG or PNG. It uses the same technology as the AV1 video format to compress images efficiently. AV1 supports advanced features like transparency, HDR, and high color depth like heic. The file format extension is .avif, and the format itself offers many benefits over older image formats like JPEG and PNG. Many websites and apps are starting to use AV1 to make pages load faster without losing image quality.
Safari, Chrome and FireFox renders AVIF images nicely and it saves them in their cache where you can find them with File Juicer.
AVIF files are widely supported in macOS by Finder which can preview the images, by Preview which can open them, and by Apple Photos which can store and edit them.
As older computers don't quite have support yet, exporting to AVIF is not widely implemented by apps.
